Flutes Piccolos Altos

Verne Q. Powell Flutes, Inc.

Handmade Custom Piccolo
The orchestral repertoire makes many demands on the piccolo. The player depends on this instrument to confidently produce a strong, colorful sound that is in tune on the high notes of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8, while projecting well in the low passages of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite.

A Powell piccolo produces a dark, lyrical tone that makes the instrument sound like an extension of the flute. Powell makes piccolos from grenadilla and kingwood. Artisans carefully select only the highest quality wood, and promptly discard any flawed pieces.

Handmade Custom Flute
Each Powell flute has a unique character, yet all bear a family resemblance. Powell instruments are made, with care, to exacting tolerances. But, ultimately, a Powell flute or piccolo is crafted to a musical performance standard.

From the first flute made in 1927 by Verne Q. Powell, to today's Powell flutes, the humanity of each artisan at Powell is reflected in the character of the instrument. The feel of a key or the aesthetic of a pointed arm are the subtle but telltale signs of the individuality of the flutemaker.

In the final analysis it is the musician who determines the true voice of the flute. The unique quality and excellence of a Powell instrument resides in its ability to be shaped by the flutist.

Throughout its history, Powell's tradition has been dynamic: it has successfully resolved the tension between innovation and the preservation of traditional qualities. Each new idea is tested against the primary question, "What will it do to the Powell sound?" Only those innovations that enhance Powell's artistic concept are adopted.

Because of Powell's dynamic tradition, many small decisions are made that cumulatively
create a unique and balanced whole: a flute that has both character and consistency.

Handmade Conservatory Flute
The name "Powell" has meant excellence in flutes since Verne Q. Powell established his own workshop in 1927. Mr. Powell made his first conservatory flute in 1928, called the Commercial Model. These flutes had extruded tone holes, and plain cups with Y-arms.

Throughout its history, Powell's tradition has been dynamic: it has successfully resolved the tension between innovation and the preservation of traditional qualities. Since 1928 Powell has produced several versions of the Conservatory flute. Today's Conservatory models, introduced in 2002, combined the aesthetic of the traditional Handmade Custom model with Powell's Posi-Stop
TM tail design.

In order to maximize the resonance and response of the flute, none of the key tails rest on the flute tube. Instead, their movement is halted by nearly invisible Posi-Stops, which look like small spring posts set on the ribs of the ribs of the flute. French cups with pointed arms are standard.

STERLING SILVER The Conservatory Model is a handmade, professional quality flute. Sterling silver is used for both body and keys, and springs are 10k white gold. Tone holes are extruded to the renowned, Modern Powell Scale. Each sterling silver Conservatory instrument possesses the special sonority, scale, and color for which all Powell flutes are known.

GOLD Aurumite is the unique combination of sterling silver and gold, developed by Powell in 1987, and used for Handmade flutes since then. Through a patented fusion process, Powell produced flute tubing made of interlocking layers of gold and silver. The Handmade Conservatory version of Aurumite is called the "Aurumite 9k".

The outer layer of the flute is 9k rose gold, which is metallurgically fused to an inner layer of sterling silver. It is not made with plating or bonding. In fact an Aurumite 9k flute body contains 25 times more gold than a 24k gold-plated flute body, and the embouchure plate is solid 9k gold. The gold in the Aurumite 9k produces a warm and darker quality, while retaining the resonance and projection of silver.

HEADJOINTS The headjoint is acoustically the most important part of the flute, and there can be no compromise with headjoint quality.

Handmade Conservatory flutes are offered with the identical hand cut headjoints that are provided with Powell's Handmade Custom flutes. In other words, there are no separate Conservatory headjoints, as they are one and the same with Handmade Custom headjoints.

The Boston style headjoint combines its own, graceful embouchure plate with modern undercutting techniques. It is easily controlled, and produces an open, clear tone with exceptional projection.

The Philharmonic headjoint is readily identified by its broader embouchure plate. Articulation is crisp and clean, and this style is capable of broad dynamic and timbral ranges. A player can create a deep, rich tone with extraordinary carrying powerand focus.

Signature Flute
Over the years we have heard many stories of flutists who yearn for a Powell flute, but are frustrated by the high cost of our Handmade instruments. They have asked for our design and sound. They wanted the flute to be reliable and affordable. Most of all, they wanted a Powell.

And so, Powell took the challenge. The flutemakers and engineers who work on our Handmade models collaborated to design a new flute. They realized that advanced technology was the only way we could make a flute in Boston, to Powell quality standards, at an affordable price. Fortunately, their designers are creative, and we are located nearby some of the most sophisticated technology in the world.

The result is Powell's new Signature Flute, made at the Maynard headquarters just west of Boston. It is crafted with proprietary technology that produces amazing quality. For nearly three-quarters of a century the name "Powell" has meant quality in flutes. It still does.
"The refinement of sound and the overall quality in the Signature make this an ideal instrument for those seeking a more professsional approach to their performance."
